U-Bahn Helsinki M3/M4
M3:
Helsinki Metro M3/M4
First, I want to say that I am not a professional transport planner. I am doing this as a hobby in my free time! Helsinki is growing fast and many current bus lines are already at their capacity limits, so in my opinion, the metro would be the best solution. A „second metro line“ for Helsinki was already planned a long time ago, during the first metro planning phases. It never happened because it was too expensive. I have solved this problem. I designed two new metro lines: M3 (Kauppatori – Huopalahti) and M4 (Kauppatori – Lentoasema). (M5 is coming later in a separate plan). A joint depot for lines M3 and M4 would be located in Katajanokka. Turning tracks would be added at Huopalahti for line M3 and at the airport for line M4, which would also provide space for storing trains. Every station will have an island platform. The lines would be operated with the future M400 trains. The trains would be driven by a driver. Here is the route station by station. Every station serves a residential area, except Aviapolis and Lentoasema.
M3 & M4
- Katajanokka: The route starts here. This station is for the Katajanokka ferry terminal and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
- Kauppatori: This station is for people living in the southern city center, people visiting the market square, and the Suomenlinna ferry.
- Erottaja: This station is in the city center. It helps to make the busy Rautatientori station less crowded. You can easily change to trams here.
- Kamppi: This is a big station where you can change to the existing metro lines M1 and M2. There is also a big bus terminal for local and long-distance buses, a large shopping center, and many offices.
- Töölö: This station is for the Töölö district, where about 30,000 people live.
- Olympiastadion: This station is for the Olympic Stadium, Bolt Areena football stadium, Töölö Sports Hall, Helsinki Ice Hall, the outdoor swimming stadium, and the city garden. After this station, the line splits into two parts: M3 goes to Huopalahti and M4 goes to the airport (Lentoasema).
M3:
- Meilahti: This station is for the Meilahti hospital area (Helsinki University Central Hospital).
- Munkkiniemi: This station is for the Munkkiniemi residential area, where about 10,000 people live.
- Munkkivuori: This station is for the Munkkivuori residential area, where about 10,000 people live in apartment buildings.
- Huopalahti: This is the last station for line M3. Here you can change to light rail line 15 and commuter trains.
Now let’s go back to Olympiastadion station and follow line M4 to the north.
M4:
- Pasila: This station is for the fast-growing Pasila residential area and office area. It connects to the Pasila train station, where you can change to many trams, local trains, and long-distance trains.
- Olympiakylä: This station is for the Olympiakylä residential area.
- Käpylän asema: This station is next to the Käpylä train station. A new residential area is being built on the west side, so there will be more passengers in the future.
- Maunula: This station is for the people of Maunula and western Oulunkylä. You can also change to light rail line 15 here. After Maunula, the train comes above ground and runs next to the highway. It goes back underground just before Pakila.
- Pakila: This station serves the Pakila residential area of detached houses. Local feeder buses will bring more people to this station.
- Torpparinmäki: The train runs in a tunnel to Torpparinmäki. This station is for the Torpparinmäki and Paloheinä residential areas. After this station, the train comes above ground and runs in the middle of the highway.
- Tammisto: This is the only above-ground station on the line. It serves local shops and the nearby residential area. People can walk to the station using bridges and underpasses. After Tammisto, the train runs on the surface for a short distance before going back underground.
- Pakkala: This station is for a big shopping center and the airport Business Park.
- Aviapolis: Here you can change to the I and P commuter trains. The area is quite empty now, but many new buildings are planned here.
- Lentoasema: This is the last station for line M4. Here you can change to the I and P commuter trains. This station is for the Flughafen Helsinki-Vantaa.
This is my plan for the Helsinki metro lines M3 and M4. As I said, M5 is coming soon. I hope you like my plan! Please tell me what you think. 🙂
